Colegio Albania is a private educational institution administered by the Fundación Educativa Cerrejón. The institution offers bilingual (Spanish/English) education to the children of Cerrejón employees and other authorized personnel.
The school is at the center of community life in the small town of Mushaisa ‘resident’s camp’, about 10 kilometers from the coal mine. The community is quite picturesque and very peaceful. It lies nestled within a range of low-level mountains, surrounded by the majestic beauty of the desert landscape. It is located about mid-point in the Guajira, one of the driest and hottest states in Colombia. Current population is about 3,000.
The academic year runs from the first week in August through the third week in June and is divided into three trimesters or "cycles". School lets out for one month in December and two weeks at Easter.
Most classes are taught in English. The high school program is college preparatory and culminates in a U.S. High School, a Colombian Bachillerato an IB Diploma. The school is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, by the Colombian Ministry of Education, and by the International Baccalaureate for Diploma Program, and in the process of implementing the Middle Years Program and the Primary Years Program.
Most graduates go on to colleges in Colombia, the United States and other countries. There is a strong commitment to support individual students through after-school tutorial sessions, an E.S.L. Department and a Special Services Department.
Colegio Albania is committed to the development of the whole child and seeks to nurture intellectual, personal and social development. It is not always possible for students to enter at the beginning of their formal schooling and remain until the end of eleventh grade. Usually, students enter at any grade level and stay for the duration of their parents' contract. Also, our students come from very different academic backgrounds (private bilingual schools, large urban schools, public monolingual schools, small non-accredited schools and even children with no previous experience at any institution in the preschool grades). Colegio Albania accepts all students, regardless of their academic level, and finds a placement level which will suit their particular needs. This means the school must administer academic and diagnostic tests to determine student placement, and offer tutorials, remedial courses and other strategies for children who require them. We also offer Extension Programs for students in their areas of talent. Our teachers are conscious of the individual differences of their students and seek to form good citizens who will contribute positively to society. Students and parents are supportive of the school and appreciate the variety of educational experiences offered.
The school, with the support of the parents, cultivates within its students an appreciation for study, research, critical thinking, sports, creativity, artistic expression, and the constant search for excellence as well as for responsibility, self-discipline, autonomy, and spiritual development, taking into account the particular characteristics of each individual and current pedagogical theory.
